For a hunting permit to be issued, the necessary documentation is listed in the Government Gazette published on 5 February 2013 and is shown below: 224/5-2-2013

The fees payable to the government for hunting and subscriptions to Hunting Organisations are set by Ministerial Ruling. Funding of the extensive project to protect the environment carried out by Hunting Organisations relies entirely on hunters’ subscriptions on renewal of their permits at hunting associations recognized by the Ministry of the Environment.

Hunting in Greece is regulated by an annual decision taken by the Ministry in question, and is based on European Union Guidelines and the latest available biological data and specifies:

  • The species which are allowed to be hunted
  • The length of the hunting season for each species
  • The permitted time a hunter can be active
  • The maximum number of game per species which may be hunted daily
  • Regions where hunting is forbidden

This ensures that sustainable hunting is ensured according to European ruling.

As an statutory associate of the Ministry of the Environment, the GHF is obliged to submit its proposals for the compilation of the annual regulatory ruling on hunting. These proposals are scientifically documented and aim to ensure the right of Greek hunters to hunt according to sustainable game management principles.

Regulatory hunting ruling 2013- 2014

Hunting activity in Greece is defined and governed by a strict legal framework which conforms to European Law in all respects and matters related to hunting are regulated by this.

Legislation relating to hunting in Greece is among the strictest in Europe, and the European Court officially recognizes Greece’s conformity to Community Guidelines, since, on the only occasion when recourse to justice was made against Greece for hunting, the trial was abandoned due to a court ruling that the responding justifications given by Greece should be upheld.

Basic legal documents relating to hunting will be posted shortly.
