By the implementation of the International Conventions for "the protection of nature, fauna and flora" and the decrees applying to the protection and management of fauna in our country, it haw been modulated an extensive and with strong intentions of expansion network of protected areas. More specific, the categories of protected areas are determined, pursuant to the above legislation, as follows:

  • The National Parks are the main category of the national protected areas, which have been determined and exist within the frame of the Forestall legislation. They include forestall areas which have a special interest, as far as concern the conservation of the conservation of the uncultivated flora and wild fauna, geomorphologic schematisms, subsoil, atmosphere, waters and of the natural environment in general. They usually include a full-protected area, the core and one protective regional zone. Some of the activities which are prohibited to be exercised in the cores of National Parks are, the Industry, the establishment of house settlements, houses, farm houses and barracks, pasturing, woodcutting, hunting, cutting, eradication, plants collection etc. Sixteen proposed areas consist the whole or include cores of National Parks, while six areas include peripheral zones of National Parks.

The restrictions applying to the cores of National Parks, apply also to these areas. From the areas under study, 14 include lands protected as scheduled monuments of nature. But in certain great areas, the protected lands cover a very small percentage of the total extent, so that, their coverage in percentage seems to be nilpotent.
